Iyabo Ojo, the Nollywood star who has been dazzling us with her movies and fashion sense, recently spilled the tea on her love life. She revealed that she and her partner, Paulo Okoye, are having a blast in their relationship, even though they are not married.
In the latest episode of her TV show, Iyabo Ojo TV, she had a candid conversation with veteran singer Charly Boy, who is known for his controversial views on marriage and society. Iyabo said that she and Paulo are on the same page when it comes to marriage. They think that marriage is overrated and unnecessary.
She said, “We are happy together and we don’t need a piece of paper to prove it. Marriage is just a social construct that puts pressure on people to conform to unrealistic expectations. Paulo and I are free spirits, and we don’t believe in marriage.”
Charly Boy, who has been married four times and divorced three times, agreed with Iyabo’s sentiment and suggested that people should have a contract for a fixed number of years and renew it if they are happy. He said that marriage is not what it used to be when our parents got married, and people are more individualistic now.
He said, “My son called me the other day and said, ‘Dad, why can’t people have a contract and say we will just do five years in marriage and if we are lucky and happy, we renew the contract?’ It sounds funny but you know, there are different coping mechanisms because these days, marriage is not what it used to be when our parents got married. Marriage is a little bit muddled up now. And people are a little bit more individualistic than they used to be before. Nobody wants to serve anybody. Everybody wants to get their own. So, that’s where the problem starts.”
What do you think of Iyabo and Paulo’s unconventional relationship? Do you agree with Charly Boy’s idea of marriage contracts? Or do you think that marriage is still a sacred institution that should be respected and honoured? Let us know in the comments below.
