If you are planning to throw a party or a social event in Lagos State, you might want to think twice before blocking the streets with your cars and canopies. The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit has issued a stern warning to residents who engage in this practice, saying they will be prosecuted and their vehicles impounded.
The Chairman of the agency, CSP Shola Jejeloye, expressed his disapproval in a statement released on Tuesday, November 28, 2023. He described the practice as selfish and inconsiderate, saying it causes traffic congestion and discomfort to law-abiding residents.
He emphasised the need for citizens to refrain from actions that violate the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018 and the Lagos State Environmental Law of 2017. He also urged them to respect the rights of other road users and the environment.
He said the agency will not hesitate to enforce the law and sanction any offender caught blocking the streets for parties or social events. He advised residents to use designated event centers, parks or open fields for their celebrations, or obtain necessary permits from relevant authorities before using the streets.
He appealed to the public to cooperate with the agency and report any case of street blocking to the nearest police station or call the agency’s hotline. He assured them that the agency will respond swiftly and restore normalcy to the affected areas.
