Ryan O’Neal, star of Love Story and other films, dies at 82

Ryan O’Neal, the actor who stole hearts in the classic romantic drama Love Story, has passed away at the age of 82.

O’Neal died peacefully at his home in Los Angeles on December 8, 2023, after a long battle with prostate cancer. He was surrounded by his family and friends, including his four children and his longtime partner, actress Farrah Fawcett, who died in 2009.

O’Neal was one of the most popular and versatile actors of his generation, starring in films such as What’s Up, Doc?, Paper Moon, Barry Lyndon, A Bridge Too Far, and The Driver. He was nominated for an Academy Award for his performance as Oliver Barrett IV in Love Story, opposite Ali MacGraw, in 1970. The film, based on the novel by Erich Segal, was a huge box office hit and became a cultural phenomenon, with its famous line “Love means never having to say you’re sorry.”

O’Neal was also known for his tumultuous personal life, which included marriages to actresses Joanna Moore and Leigh Taylor-Young, and a rocky relationship with his daughter, Tatum O’Neal, who won an Oscar for her role in Paper Moon. He had a long and complicated romance with Fawcett, whom he met in 1979 and remained close to until her death from anal cancer. They had a son, Redmond, who struggled with drug addiction and legal troubles.

O’Neal was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia in 2001, but managed to beat the disease with treatment. He was later diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2012, and underwent surgery and radiation therapy. He continued to act in films and television, appearing in shows such as Bones, 90210, and Ryan and Tatum: The O’Neals, a reality series that documented his reconciliation with his daughter.

O’Neal was widely admired and respected by his peers and fans, who remembered him as a charming, charismatic, and talented star. He was also praised for his courage and resilience in the face of adversity, and his devotion to his loved ones. He will be greatly missed by the entertainment industry and the public, who will always cherish his legacy and his love story.
