Brooklyn Nine-Nine Fans Mourn the Loss of Andre Braugher, the Beloved Actor Behind Captain Holt
The world of comedy has lost one of its brightest stars. Andre Braugher, the Emmy-winning actor who played the stern but hilarious Captain Raymond Holt on the hit show Brooklyn Nine-Nine, passed away on December 11, 2023 at the age of 61. Braugher was widely praised for his portrayal of Holt, a black police officer who rose to the rank of captain despite facing discrimination and prejudice throughout his career. Braugher’s deadpan delivery impeccable timing, and subtle expressions made Holt one of the most memorable and quotable characters on television.

Andy Samberg, who played Holt’s protégé, Detective Jake Peralta, on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, tweeted: “I’m heartbroken to hear about Andre’s passing. He was a mentor, a friend, and a brilliant actor. He was the best captain ever.” Melissa Fumero, who played Holt’s loyal assistant, Sergeant Amy Santiago, posted a photo of her and Braugher on Instagram, with the caption: “Andre was a legend, a gentleman, and a joy to work with. He always made me laugh and he always had my back. He was more than a co-star, he was family. I love you, Andre. Rest in peace.”
Braugher’s career spanned more than three decades, and he was known for his versatility and range as an actor. He starred in several acclaimed dramas, such as Homicide: Life on the Street, Thief, and The Good Fight, as well as movies such as Glory, Primal Fear, and The Mist, also lent his voice to animated shows such as BoJack Horseman and DuckTales.
Braugher won two Primetime Emmy Awards, one for Homicide and one for Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and was nominated for nine more, also received two Golden Globe nominations and four Screen Actors Guild nominations.
Braugher is survived by his wife, Ami Brabson, and their three children. He will be remembered as a talented and respected actor, a loving husband and father, and a comedy icon. His fans and friends will always cherish his legacy and his unforgettable role as Captain Holt.
