Nollywood Mourns as Dejumo Lewis, the Iconic Kabiyesi of Village Headmaster, Passes Away at 80

Date:

The Nigerian film industry has lost one of its legends, as Dejumo Lewis, the veteran actor who played the role of Kabiyesi, the Oloja of Oja, in the classic television soap opera, Village Headmaster, died on Saturday, December 23, 2023, at the age of 80.

Lewis, who was born in 1943 in Lagos State, had a long and illustrious career in acting, producing, directing, dramatizing, filmmaking, and communications consulting. He was famous for his portrayal of the authoritative and respected village chief in Village Headmaster, Nigeria’s longest-running television soap opera shown on NTA from 1968 to 1988, that starred other great actors such as Justus Esiri and Femi Robinson.

Lewis was also a pioneer of the Nigerian theatre, having been involved in many stage productions, such as Wole Soyinka’s The Trials of Brother Jero, Ola Rotimi’s The Gods Are Not to Blame, and Femi Osofisan’s Morountodun. He was also a mentor and a teacher to many young actors, who looked up to him for guidance and inspiration.

Lewis was a man of many talents and interests, who had a passion for culture, education, and social justice. He was a devout Catholic, who had spent 10 years at the seminary, studying to become a priest, before he abandoned the idea for television and acting. He was also a lover of music, especially jazz, and a collector of African art and artifacts.

Lewis was married twice, but both marriages ended in divorce. He had four children from his first marriage, who are all based abroad. He lived alone in his Lagos home, where he died peacefully in his sleep. Lewis had been battling with diabetes and hypertension for some years, but he never let his health condition affect his spirit and enthusiasm for life.

Lewis will be remembered as a legend, a pioneer, a mentor, and a friend to many in the Nigerian film industry and beyond. He will be greatly missed by his fans, colleagues, family, and friends. May his soul rest in peace.
