Chelsea have confirmed that young defender Ian Maatsen has joined Borussia Dortmund on loan for the rest of the season and has also agreed a new contract with the club until 2026.
The 21-year-old Dutchman has impressed in his 15 appearances for the Blues this term, showing his versatility and potential in various positions across the backline.
However, with Chelsea boasting a wealth of defensive options, Maatsen has opted to seek more regular game time in Germany, where he will link up with fellow Chelsea loanee Michy Batshuayi at Dortmund.
Maatsen, who joined Chelsea from PSV Eindhoven in 2015, has already gained valuable experience from previous loan spells at Charlton Athletic, Coventry City, and Burnley.
He will now hope to make an impact in the Bundesliga and challenge for silverware with Dortmund, who are currently second in the table behind Bayern Munich.
Chelsea have shown their faith in Maatsen’s future by handing him a new long-term deal, which will keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2026.
