Despite securing a crucial 1-0 victory over hosts Ivory Coast in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, Nigeria goalkeeper Christian Nwabili was not satisfied with his own performance.
The 23-year-old, who made his debut for the Super Eagles in the opening game against Equatorial Guinea, kept his second consecutive clean sheet at the Stade Olympique Ouattara on Thursday.
However, he felt he could have done more to help his team, who clinched the three points thanks to a second-half penalty from captain William Troost-Ekong.
“I’m not happy at all. I know I can do better for my country. This was not a great game for me, or how I usually play,” he told Soccernet in a candid interview.
“I’m happy for the team’s win, but I’m not happy with myself. I want to play the ball more, be more confident, and enjoy myself on the pitch.”
Nwabili, who plays for Spanish club Almeria, revealed that he was inspired by the legendary Nigerian goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama, who holds the record for the most appearances and clean sheets for the Super Eagles.
“He is my idol. I watched him when I was growing up. He was always calm, composed, and commanding. He saved Nigeria many times. I want to be like him,” he said.
Nwabili will have another chance to prove himself when Nigeria face Guinea-Bissau in their final group game on Monday. A win or a draw will guarantee their place in the last 16 of the tournament.
“I’m ready for the next challenge. I want to make my country proud. I want to make history with this team,” he said.
