In a stunning upset, Jannik Sinner defeated Novak Djokovic in the semi-final of the Australian Open, ending the Serbian legend’s six-year unbeaten run at Melbourne Park. The 22-year-old Italian, who had never played a Grand Slam final before, outplayed Djokovic in four sets, 6-1 6-2 6-7 6-3.
Sinner broke Djokovic’s serve four times in the first two sets, and had a match point in the third set tie-break, but Djokovic saved it with a forehand winner. However, Sinner did not let the opportunity slip away, and broke Djokovic again in the fourth set to seal the victory.
Djokovic, who was aiming for his 11th Australian Open title and 25th major overall, had not lost a match at the season’s first major since 2018. He had won 33 consecutive matches and 10 semi-finals at the Australian Open, but Sinner proved to be his nemesis.
Sinner will face either Daniil Medvedev or Alexander Zverev in the final on Sunday. Medvedev, the third seed, is a two-time runner-up at the Australian Open, while Zverev, the sixth seed, is seeking his maiden Grand Slam title.
