Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has expressed his determination to make history with Nigeria at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, in Ivory Coast.
Osimhen, who was named the African Footballer of the Year at the 2023 CAF Awards, has been one of the standout performers in the AFCON as he helped Jose Peseiro’s men reach the quarterfinals.
The Napoli star, who finished as the Serie A top scorer with 26 goals in the 2022-23 season, was instrumental in Nigeria’s 2-0 win over Cameroon in the last-16 encounter over the weekend. He provided a brilliant assist for Ademola Lookman to open the scoring in the first half. Osimhen has only scored one goal in the AFCON so far, which was a stunning volley against Equatorial Guinea in the group stage.
“I want to win something with this great squad,” Osimhen told The Guardian UK reporter Osasu Obayiuwana. “We have a lot of quality players and a good coach who believes in us. We are not here to just participate; we are here to compete and make our country proud.”
“I want to give Nigeria something that they will remember. I’m giving everything to come home with the [AFCON] trophy.
Osimhen will hope to lead Nigeria to victory when they face Angola in the last-8 on Friday. The Super Eagles are aiming to win their fourth AFCON title, and their first since 2013.
