Arsenal kept their title hopes alive with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Nottingham Forest at the City Ground on Tuesday night. The Gunners, who trailed Liverpool by five points before the game, scored two goals in seven minutes in the second half to break Forest’s resistance and close the gap on the league leaders.
Gabriel Jesus opened the scoring in the 65th minute with a low shot that slipped through the legs of Forest keeper Matt Turner, who had a night to forget. The Brazilian striker then turned provider for Bukayo Saka, who doubled Arsenal’s lead in the 72nd minute after pouncing on a mistake by Gonzalo Montiel.
Forest, who had frustrated Arsenal for most of the game with their defensive organisation, gave themselves a lifeline in the 89th minute when substitute Taiwo Awoniyi scored from close range. The Nigerian forward almost snatched a dramatic equaliser in stoppage time, but his shot was saved by David Raya.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta celebrated the win with his players and staff at the final whistle, showing how much it meant for their title challenge. The Gunners will now face Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, hoping to overtake them at the top of the table.
