Date:

The world of country music is mourning the loss of one of its most iconic stars, Toby Keith, who died on Monday at the age of 62. Keith, who had been battling stomach cancer since 2022, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family, according to a statement on his website.

Keith was a prolific singer, songwriter, actor, and record producer, who sold over 40 million albums worldwide and charted 61 singles on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts, including 20 number one hits.

He was known for his patriotic anthems, such as “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue”, his humorous and rowdy tunes, such as “Red Solo Cup”, and his heartfelt ballads, such as “My List”. He also collaborated with legends like Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, and Clint Eastwood, and starred in movies like “Broken Bridges” and “Beer for My Horses”.

Keith rose to fame in the 1990s, after working as a roughneck in the oil fields of Oklahoma and playing semi-pro football. He released his debut album, Toby Keith, in 1993, and followed it with a string of successful albums and singles that earned him multiple awards and accolades, including four American Music Awards, two Academy of Country Music Awards, and a National Medal of Arts, which he received from President Donald Trump in 2021.

Keith was also a generous philanthropist, who supported various causes, such as the USO, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and the Toby Keith Foundation, which he founded in 2006 to help children with cancer and their families.

Keith’s fans and fellow artists took to social media to express their grief and pay tribute to his legacy.

Dolly Parton tweeted, “Toby Keith was a true country music hero. He sang from his heart and soul, and touched millions of lives with his music. I’m heartbroken to hear of his passing. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.”

Garth Brooks wrote, “Toby Keith was a friend, a mentor, and a legend. He inspired me and countless others to pursue our dreams and never give up. He was a giant in the industry and a patriot in the nation. I will miss him dearly.” Carrie Underwood posted, “Toby Keith was one of the first artists I ever saw live, and he blew me away with his energy and charisma. He was a master of his craft and a trailblazer for country music. I’m honored to have shared the stage with him and learned from him. Rest in peace, Toby. You will always be remembered and loved.”
