Nigerian singer and model Ayra Starr has opened up about her mother’s fashion advice. The 21-year-old star, who is known for rocking short dresses and skirts on stage and on social media, said her mother has urged her to start wearing long skirts.
“My mum asked me to start wearing long skirts. She said it’s more decent and ladylike,” She revealed this on X formally (Twitter) “She also said it would help me avoid unwanted attention from men.”
Starr, whose real name is Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe, is one of the hottest acts in the Nigerian music scene. She rose to fame in 2021 with her debut EP Ayra Starr, which featured the hit song “Away”.
Starr, who describes herself as a “Sabi girl” (a slang term for a smart and confident girl), said she loves to express herself through her fashion choices. She said she is inspired by artists like Rihanna, Beyoncé, and Tiwa Savage, who are known for their bold and diverse styles.
“I like to wear what makes me feel comfortable and sexy. I don’t follow trends, I create them,” she said. They show off my legs and my curves. They also match my music, which is upbeat and energetic.”
Starr said she respects her mother’s opinion, but she does not intend to change her wardrobe anytime soon. She said she believes in being true to herself and her fans, who love her for who she is.
“My mum is very supportive of my career and my dreams. She just wants me to be safe and happy,” she said. “But I’m not going to wear long skirts just because she said so. I’m going to wear what I want, because that’s who I am. I’m Ayra Starr, the Sabi girl.”
