Nigeria has lost one of its finest actresses, Ethel Ekpe, who succumbed to cancer on Wednesday in Lagos State.
The late actress was a household name in the Nigerian entertainment industry, having played the role of ‘Segi’ in the popular sitcom on Nigerian Television Authority by Ken Saro Wiwa titled ‘Basi and Company.’
Ekpe also starred in Amaka Igwe’s ‘Forever’ and the ‘Sons of the Caliphate.’
The Director-General of the National Film and Video Censors Board, Dr. Shaibu Husseini, broke the news of her death in a late Facebook post on Wednesday. Husseini wrote, “It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of Ethel Ekpe, (Ethel Aderemi nee Ekpe), the screen goddess that enchanted fans with her unique portrayal of the role of Segi in the classic sitcom on Nigerian Television Authority by Ken Saro Wiwa titled ‘Basi and Company’.
“The actress and later day Pastor and star of Amaka Igwe’s ‘Forever’ and most recently ‘Sons of the Caliphate” lost her battle with Cancer today in Lagos.”
“She will be greatly missed,” adding that his family “will especially miss her because we named my second daughter Ethel, after her. Farewell good woman!”
