Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, who plays for Chippa United in South Africa, has been targeted by angry South African fans after his heroic performance against their country.
The South African fans reportedly sent him threatening messages, telling him not to return to his club after the AFCON.
The threats were exposed by former Super Eagles star Idah Peterside, who spoke to Channels Television on Thursday. He said that some fans were bitter with Nwabali for denying them a chance to reach the finals.
He said, “The biggest problem we have had is that we have received some messages where people have sent messages to the goalkeeper threatening him. I hear some people are telling him not to come back to South Africa since you didn’t want us to score. We have not heard of any violence, but just threats. They have been threatening him and threatening some people.”
Nwabali was the hero of the semi-final match against Bafana Bafana, making vital saves during normal time and stopping two penalties during the shootout.
