Alexei Navalny, the fearless Russian opposition leader who exposed the corruption and brutality of Vladimir Putin’s regime, has died in prison at the age of 47. His death, announced by the Russian prison service on Saturday, is widely suspected to be a political assassination orchestrated by the Kremlin.
Navalny was a lawyer, activist, blogger, and politician who dedicated his life to fighting for democracy and human rights in Russia. He rose to prominence as an anti-corruption crusader, uncovering the lavish lifestyles and illicit wealth of Putin’s inner circle.
He also organized massive anti-government protests, mobilized millions of supporters online, and ran for office despite facing constant harassment, arrests, and attacks.
In August 2020, Navalny was poisoned with a nerve agent by agents of the FSB, Russia’s security service, while on a flight from Siberia to Moscow. He survived the assassination attempt and was airlifted to Germany for treatment.
After recovering, he returned to Russia in January 2021, knowing that he would be arrested upon arrival. He was detained at the airport and sentenced to 19 years in a penal colony on trumped-up charges of violating his parole.
In prison, Navalny endured harsh conditions, torture, and medical neglect. He went on a hunger strike to demand proper care for his deteriorating health. He released a video investigation that revealed a secret palace built for Putin on the Black Sea coast, costing over $1 billion.
The video has been viewed over 100 million times on YouTube. He also called for nationwide protests, which drew tens of thousands of people to the streets despite a brutal crackdown by the police.
Navalny’s death has sparked outrage and grief among his supporters and allies, as well as condemnation and calls for accountability from the international community. Many have hailed him as a hero and a martyr, who sacrificed his life for the cause of freedom and justice.
His wife, Yulia Navalnaya, who stood by his side throughout his ordeal, posted a photo of him on Instagram with the caption:
“You were not just a husband, you were a life partner, a friend, a mentor. You were everything to me. I love you more than anything in the world.”
