The Road to Morocco: AFCON 2025 Preliminary Round Draw Set for Today
The excitement and anticipation for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco is building up, as the preliminary round draw will take place today at the Confederation of African Football (CAF) headquarters in Cairo, Egypt.
The draw, which will be conducted at 2 p.m. local time (12 p.m. GMT), will determine the fate of the eight lowest-ranked teams in the FIFA rankings:
Somalia, Djibouti, Sao Tome, Chad, Mauritius, South Sudan, Liberia, and Eswatini.
These teams will face each other in a two-legged knockout format, with the winners joining the 44 exempted teams in the group stage.
The preliminary round matches will be played during the FIFA window of March 18-26, 2024. The group stage draw will be held at a later date, with the 48 teams divided into 12 groups of four. The top two teams from each group, along with the four best third-placed teams, will advance to the knockout stage of the tournament.
