In a stunning turn of events, Thomas Tuchel has announced that he will leave Bayern Munich at the end of the season, ending his two-year stint at the helm of the German giants.
The former Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund boss, has been under pressure following a poor run of form that has seen them slip to second place in the league, eight points behind leaders Bayer Leverkusen, and lose the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie against Lazio.
Tuchel confirmed his departure in a statement on the club’s website, saying: “We have agreed that we will end our collaboration after the end of this season. Until then, my staff and I will of course continue to do everything we can to ensure the maximum success.
According to reports in Germany, Tuchel’s decision came after a series of clashes with the club’s hierarchy, especially sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic, over transfers, tactics, and player management. Tuchel was also unhappy with the lack of backing from the board amid criticism from former players and pundits.
Bayern president Herbert Hainer expressed his regret over Tuchel’s departure, saying: “We are very sorry that Thomas Tuchel has decided to leave us. He is a top-class coach who has achieved great things with us. We respect his decision and wish him all the best for his future.”
Bayern will now have to look for a new manager, with several names being linked with the job, including former player and current Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso.
