Onyeka credits AFCON performance for his improved fitness and form

Date:

Frank Onyeka, the Nigerian midfielder who plays for Brentford in the English Premier League, has attributed his improved performance to his participation in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Onyeka was a key member of the Super Eagles squad that reached the final of the continental tournament, where they lost to Cote d’Ivoire on penalties. He played in all seven matches, completing an impressive 14 tackles and 11 interceptions, making him the leader in both categories at the tournament.

The 26-year-old said that playing at the AFCON helped him boost his fitness level and confidence, as well as learn from some of the best players in Africa.

“Playing at the AFCON has improved my performance level. It was a great experience for me to represent my country and play against some of the best teams and players in Africa. I learned a lot from the tournament and I think it has given me more momentum and motivation for the rest of the season,” Onyeka said.

Onyeka returned to Brentford on Friday after his impressive AFCON showing. He was welcomed by his teammates and club staff, who congratulated him on his achievement. He also revealed that his teammate Neal Maupay asked him about Alex Iwobi, who has been criticized by some fans for his performance in the final.

“Neal asked me how Alex is doing. He said he felt sorry for him because he knows how much he loves Nigeria and how hard he works. I told him that Alex is fine and that he is a strong character. He will bounce back from this and prove his critics wrong,” Onyeka said.

Onyeka is expected to be in contention for Brentford’s next game against Liverpool at the Community Stadium on Saturday. He has made 16 Premier League appearances for the Bees this season, scoring one goal and providing one assist.

Onyeka hopes to help his side finish the season on a strong note and secure their Premier League status for another year. He also expressed his gratitude to Brentford for allowing him to play at the AFCON and supporting him throughout the tournament.

“I want to thank Brentford for giving me the opportunity to play at the AFCON. They have been very supportive and understanding of my situation. They have been following my progress and sending me messages of encouragement. I really appreciate that and I want to repay them by giving my best for the team,” Onyeka said.
