Update: Sony’s Next-Gen Console: PS5 Pro to launch in late 2024 with 8K and VR Support, sources say

Date:

Sony has been dominating the console market with its PlayStation 5, which launched in November 2020 and has sold over 25 million units worldwide. But the Japanese tech giant is not resting on its laurels, as rumors suggest that it is working on a more powerful version of the PS5, dubbed the PS5 Pro.

According to a report by CNBC, Sony is planning to release the PS5 Pro in the second half of 2024, as a response to the increasing demand for high-end gaming experiences. The PS5 Pro is expected to feature improved specs, such as a higher number of compute units, faster memory, and dedicated hardware for ray tracing. These enhancements would enable the PS5 Pro to support 8K gaming, or 4K gaming at higher frame rates, for select titles.

The PS5 Pro is also rumored to have a detachable Blu-ray player, which would allow users to choose whether they want to use physical discs or digital downloads. This could also reduce the production and shipping costs of the console, as well as its environmental impact. The PS5 Pro could also come with a new controller, possibly with more advanced haptic feedback and adaptive triggers.

The PS5 Pro is likely to cost more than the PS5, which currently retails for $499. Some analysts predict that the PS5 Pro could be priced at $599 or $699, depending on the specs and features. However, this could also depend on the availability and affordability of the components, which have been affected by the global chip shortage.

Sony has not officially confirmed or denied the existence of the PS5 Pro, but it has hinted at its interest in developing new hardware for the PS5.

In an interview with T3, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan said  “we are always looking at new technologies and how they can enhance the gaming experience”. He also said that “we have a history of iterating with our consoles”, referring to the PS4 Pro and the PS VR.

The PS5 Pro could be a game-changer for Sony, as it would offer a more immersive and realistic gaming experience for its loyal fanbase. It could also attract new customers who are looking for the best performance and graphics in the console market.

However, the PS5 Pro could also face competition from Microsoft, which could launch its own upgraded version of the Xbox Series X, or from other emerging players in the cloud gaming and VR sectors.

What do you think of the PS5 Pro? Are you excited about its potential features and capabilities? Let us know in the comments below.
