Kenneth Mitchell, beloved ‘Star Trek’ actor, passes away at 49 after courageous fight with ALS

Date:

Kenneth Mitchell, the actor who brought life to various characters in the “Star Trek” universe, passed away on Saturday at his home in Los Angeles. He was 49 years old.

Mitchell was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, in 2018. The incurable condition affects the nerve cells that control muscle movement, leading to progressive weakness and paralysis.

Despite the devastating diagnosis, Mitchell did not let ALS define him or stop him from pursuing his passion. He continued to work on “Star Trek: Discovery”, playing four different roles, including the Klingon leader Kol and the wise monk Tenavik. He also voiced several characters in “Star Trek: Lower Decks” and appeared in the blockbuster film “Captain Marvel”.

Mitchell’s courage and resilience inspired his fans, friends, and colleagues, who admired his positive attitude and sense of humor. He often shared his journey on social media, raising awareness and funds for ALS research. He also participated in various events and campaigns, such as the Ice Bucket Challenge and the Walk to Defeat ALS.

Mitchell was born in Toronto, Canada, on Nov. 24, 1974. He began his acting career in theater and later moved to Los Angeles, where he landed roles in several TV shows and movies, such as “Jericho”, “The Astronaut Wives Club”, and “Miracle”.

Mitchell is survived by his wife, Susan, and their two children, Lilah and Kallum, who were his greatest source of joy and strength. He is also survived by his parents, siblings, and many other relatives and friends.

In a statement posted on Instagram, Mitchell’s family said he was a “hope seeker, dream believer, beach walker, garden grower, cat lover, and more than anything else, a proud father.”

They also said he wished to be buried under the roots of a tree, “so I can be soaked up, all my matter, my energy, my love, my laughter, my tears and I want to reach up through the branches and touch the night sky.”

The “Star Trek” community mourned the loss of Mitchell, calling him a “talented actor and a beautiful human being.” They also expressed their condolences and gratitude to his family, who supported him throughout his battle with ALS.

Mitchell’s legacy will live on in his work, his words, and his spirit. He will be remembered as a star who shone brightly on and off the screen, and who touched the hearts of millions with his bravery and kindness.
