The Oyo State Government in Nigeria has begun a demolition operation in the state capital, Ibadan. The operation started at the Fashade community along Circular Road and is expected to affect about 12 villages in the Ona-Ara Local Government Area.
A community leader, Abdulfatal Amubikan, claimed that around 500 houses have been demolished. However, the state Commissioner for Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Williams Akinfunmilayo, disputed this number. According to him, just over 50 structures were affected, particularly those within 100 to 150 meters of Circular Road.
The commissioner also mentioned that residents with valid documentation should come to the secretariat for compensation. The government has acquired land 500 meters to the left and right of the road, and those affected who have genuine papers will be compensated.
