Sanwo-Olu Announces Decentralization of 300+ Primary Health Centers to Enhance Lagos Healthcare

Date:

The Lagos State Government has embarked on a strategic decentralization of its primary healthcare facilities, exceeding 300 in number, to elevate the standard of healthcare services throughout the state.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, during the inauguration of the Atlantis Paediatric and Multi-Specialist Hospital in Lekki, highlighted that this initiative is set to boost operational efficiency and enhance the caliber of healthcare, while also bolstering the capabilities of general hospitals.

The governor elaborated that this extensive decentralization encompasses the modernization of infrastructure and the professional development of healthcare personnel to deliver superior services.

“We have pioneered a unique approach by decentralizing our primary health facilities, appointing seven new permanent secretaries, all of whom are esteemed medical doctors,” Sanwo-Olu stated.

This restructuring of our primary healthcare centers (PHCs) aims to facilitate accessible healthcare and expedite services across our network of over 330 centers. Our goal is to expand their role beyond consultations to complement the efforts of our approximately 30 general hospitals.”

Furthermore, Governor Sanwo-Olu proudly asserted that his administration has established more hospitals in the past four years than in the preceding decade.

His administration has initiated the construction of what is anticipated to be the largest paediatric hospital in sub-Saharan Africa, named the new Massey Children’s Hospital, which is currently visible to daily commuters near the Third Mainland Bridge. This state-of-the-art facility, ascending to ten floors, is set to become a landmark of pride.

The governor also disclosed plans for the largest mental health facility in the region, with a capacity of nearly 1,000 beds, addressing the often-overlooked issue of mental health.

In a call to action, Sanwo-Olu urged private entities and individuals to increase their investment in health financing, aiming to curtail medical tourism and the exodus of medical professionals. He emphasized the importance of fostering a collaborative environment through Public-Private Partnerships to deliver healthcare to society’s most vulnerable groups.

In conclusion, the governor reaffirmed his commitment to partnering with private investors to mitigate medical tourism and professional brain drain by enhancing diagnostic services and
