Yemi Alade, Acclaimed Singer, Attributes Award Drought to Rejection of Unwanted Advances

In an unexpected disclosure, Yemi Alade, the acclaimed singer, has revealed that her sparse award recognition in Nigeria is due to her steadfast refusal to succumb to unwanted advances from influential figures within the industry.

Throughout her illustrious career, the singer behind the hit ‘Johnny’ confessed that numerous industry powerhouses have made inappropriate propositions, offering career progression in return for sexual favors.

Despite the allure of potential advantages, Alade has remained resolute in her stance, asserting her preference to uphold her dignity and adhere to her principles, even if it results in missed opportunities.

As reported by WithInNigeria, Alade stated, “There was a period in the industry when I was the object of everyone’s desires. Today, my lack of awards in Nigeria can be attributed to men.”

She further elaborated, “I perceived giving in to these advances as a necessary compromise to gain access to certain platforms, secure deals, and even win awards. However, the moment I decided to reject such offers, I found many doors abruptly shut on me.”

WHO IS YEMI ALADE?

Yemi Eberechi Alade, known professionally as Yemi Alade, is a renowned Nigerian singer, songwriter, actress, and activist. Born on March 13, 1989, in Abia State, Nigeria, she has made a significant impact in several countries across Africa with her music, which spans genres such as Afropop, highlife, dancehall, pop, and R&B.

Alade is multilingual and sings in English, Igbo, Pidgin, Yoruba, French, Swahili, and Portuguese. She rose to fame after winning the 2009 Peak Talent Show and later had a hit with her single “Johnny” in 2014. Her debut album, ‘King of Queens’, reportedly sold millions of copies.

She has been recognized for her creative and overwhelming stage performances, fashion, and music videos. In 2022, Yemi Alade received a Grammy nomination for her song “Dignity” with Angelique Kidjo. She is also the first African female to be nominated for the MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs) and was nominated for the BET awards for Best International Act: Africa in 2015 and 2016.
