Champions League Quarter-Final: Arsenal and Bayern Munich Fight to a 2-2 Stalemate

Date:

In the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final at Emirates Stadium, Arsenal’s aspirations were left hanging by a thread as they battled to a 2-2 draw with Bayern Munich. Harry Kane, Tottenham’s all-time leading scorer, marked his return to North London with a goal.

Arsenal fans gave Kane a predictably frosty welcome, but were soon cheering when Bukayo Saka’s precise strike gave the Gunners an early lead just 12 minutes into the game.

Despite their struggles in the Bundesliga, Bayern managed to regain their footing before halftime. Ex-Arsenal player Serge Gnabry found the back of the net six minutes after Saka’s goal, bringing the game level.

The spotlight fell on Kane when Leroy Sane was tripped by William Saliba following a rapid run. The England skipper took the penalty and responded to the jeers with his 15th goal in 20 games against Arsenal.

While Mikel Arteta’s team didn’t display their usual fluidity, substitute Leandro Trossard managed to score an equaliser thanks to an excellent assist from Gabriel Jesus.

In the dying moments of the game, Arsenal believed they deserved a penalty. However, the referee dismissed their claims when Saka was brought down by goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.
