The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has confirmed Finidi George as the latest head coach for the Super Eagles, succeeding Emmanuel Amuneke in the competition for the position.
Previously an international player himself, George had been assisting José Santos Peseiro for 20 months before Peseiro voluntarily stepped down from his role after leading the team to a second-place finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire. George had already assumed temporary leadership of the team during two friendly matches in Morocco the previous month.
George’s immediate challenge is to steer the Super Eagles towards success in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against South Africa and Benin Republic. These matches, scheduled to take place in Uyo and Abidjan respectively in just over five weeks, are crucial for the team’s advancement.
Currently, the Super Eagles are in a challenging position, ranking third in Group C of the African campaign, trailing behind Rwanda and South Africa. These upcoming matches are therefore critical for their progress.
