The Delta Police Command recently apprehended Chiemenam Adigwe, a 45-year-old man from Akpo community in Aguata LGA, Anambra State, known for his involvement in the production of counterfeit alcoholic beverages.
Adigwe was among the suspects detained by the police and presented at the Delta Police Command headquarters in Asaba earlier this week. He was showcased alongside individuals implicated in kidnapping, armed robbery, and other criminal activities.
Adigwe’s arrest was the result of an intelligence report received by the Delta Police Command about a person in Bomadi producing fake alcoholic drinks. In response to the report, the State Commissioner of Police, CP Abaniwonda, instructed the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Bomadi to look into the matter.
Following the directive, the DPO led a team of officers to the location, where they apprehended Adigwe. Over a hundred bottles of counterfeit Gordons, Chelsea, Eagle Schnapps, and McDowell’s were seized from his premises.
During a press briefing on the arrest, the Police Commissioner explained that Adigwe produced the counterfeit drinks by mixing ethanol with water, adding flavor, and then packaging these concoctions in empty bottles of Gordons, Chelsea, and McDowell’s, which he typically purchased from Onitsha.
Adigwe admitted to telling his customers that he sourced the drinks from Onitsha whenever he made deliveries. He is currently in custody, and the investigation is ongoing.
