A security guard was wounded in a shooting incident that took place outside the residence of Drake, the renowned Canadian rapper, in Toronto.
The incident occurred around 02:00 EDT (06:00 GMT) on Tuesday, with the suspects fleeing the scene immediately after the shooting.
The police are yet to confirm whether Drake was present at his Park Lane Circle mansion during the incident or if he was the intended target of the shooting. Currently, Drake is involved in a verbal feud with Kendrick Lamar, a fellow rapper from the US.
Inspector Paul Krawczyk of the Integrated Gun and Gang Task Force stated that it’s too premature to discuss a potential motive for the shooting. He also mentioned that Drake’s team is cooperating with the investigation. The police are reviewing video footage of the incident but have not released any information due to issues with the video quality.
The security guard, who is now in the hospital in serious condition, reportedly sustained multiple gunshot wounds, including one to the chest.
The ongoing lyrical dispute between Drake and Lamar has escalated recently, with both artists releasing a series of “diss tracks” over the weekend. Lamar’s latest song, “Not Like Us,” which is currently topping music charts globally, features cover art depicting Drake’s house in the upscale Bridle Path neighborhood of Toronto.
In “Not Like Us,” Lamar accuses Drake of engaging in relationships with underage girls and concealing a secret child. The cover art seems to insinuate that Drake is sheltering multiple sex offenders in his home. In response, Drake released “The Heart Part 6,” where he denies the allegations and expresses his disgust.
Drake, who refers to his home as “The Embassy,” has mentioned it in his music and social media posts. The property’s gates are twice the height allowed by city regulations, a measure taken due to his security concerns.
Currently, the property is sealed off with caution tape as the police continue their investigation into the shooting.
