A helicopter transporting Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi crashed in the northwest region of Iran on Sunday afternoon.
The survival status of Raisi and other passengers on board remains uncertain.
The accident occurred during the president’s visit to neighboring Azerbaijan. Iran’s Interior Minister announced that rescue teams have been dispatched to the crash site.
The official Iranian news agency, IRNA, reported that the helicopter was carrying Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, and local officials at the time of the incident.
The semi-official Fars news agency urged Iranians to pray for Raisi in light of the reports.
Interior Minister Ahmed Vahidi informed state TV that they are awaiting more information about the incident.
Raisi, 63, was elected president on his second attempt in 2021. Since assuming office, he has enforced stricter morality laws, supervised a severe suppression of anti-government protests, and vigorously pursued nuclear negotiations with global powers.
