Barack Obama has officially endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic presidential nominee, putting an end to the speculation surrounding his support.
In a joint statement from former President Obama and ex-First Lady Michelle Obama, they expressed their belief that Ms. Harris possesses the “vision, the character, and the strength that this critical moment demands.”
After President Joe Biden’s announcement last Sunday that he was withdrawing from the race, it was reported that Mr. Obama joined over 100 prominent Democrats with whom Harris had consultations. Although he praised Biden’s decision at the time, he refrained from endorsing Harris.
The Vice President has already garnered the backing of a majority of Democratic delegates, positioning her favorably for official nomination at the party convention scheduled for August.
In their statement released on Friday, the Obamas expressed their enthusiasm about endorsing Harris, pledging to do “everything we can” to support her candidacy.
“We agree with President Biden,” the couple stated, “choosing Kamala was one of the best decisions he’s made. She has the resume to prove it.” They highlighted her experience as California’s attorney general, a U.S. senator, and her current role as Vice President.
“However, Kamala has more than just an impressive resume,” the statement added. “She embodies the vision, character, and strength that this pivotal moment requires.
“There is no doubt in our minds that Kamala Harris has what it takes to win this election and serve the American people effectively. At a time when the stakes have never been higher, she gives us all a reason to hope.”
The statement was accompanied by a heartwarming video of Ms. Harris receiving a phone call from the Obamas, during which they reaffirmed their support. In the clip, the Vice President exclaimed, “Oh my goodness. Michelle, Barack, this means so much to me.”
