Philippines Slams China’s ‘Illegal Acts’ in South China Sea

Date:

Philippine Defence Chief Gilberto Teodoro accused China of being the “biggest disruptor” of peace in Southeast Asia, amid escalating tensions over disputed South China Sea territories. Teodoro’s remarks came during a US Indo-Pacific Command conference, following repeated confrontations between Philippine and Chinese vessels.

China claims almost the entire South China Sea, disregarding rival claims and an international ruling that deemed its stance has no legal basis. Its claims encroach on the Philippines’ Exclusive Economic Zone, sparking concerns. Teodoro urged other countries to condemn China’s “illegal acts” and join forces to pressure Beijing to stop its actions.

The comments follow China’s “control measures” against two Philippine Coast Guard ships near Sabina Shoal in the Spratly Islands. The Philippine Coast Guard was forced to abandon its mission due to China’s excessive deployment of ships and rough sea conditions. Recent confrontations have raised fears that China may build an artificial island at Sabina Shoal.

Relations between the Philippines and China have deteriorated as Manila stands up to Chinese actions in the contested waters. In June, a Philippine sailor lost a thumb in a confrontation where Beijing’s coast guard confiscated or destroyed Philippine equipment. Teodoro’s call for collective action against China’s aggressive behavior in the South China Sea highlights the need for regional cooperation to maintain peace and stability.
