Magpies Win: Tonali Back with a Bang

Date:

Sandro Tonali made a triumphant return to the pitch after serving a 10-month suspension for breaching betting rules, as Newcastle United edged out Nottingham Forest in a thrilling Carabao Cup encounter that went to penalties. The Italy midfielder played 60 minutes at the City Ground, showcasing his skills before being replaced.

Newcastle stormed out of the gates, with Joe Willock scoring the opening goal just 18 seconds into the match. Alexander Isak’s shot was parried by Forest debutant Carlos Miguel, and Willock capitalized on the rebound. Tonali had a chance to double the lead in the third minute, but Miguel denied him.

However, Newcastle’s joy was short-lived as Willock exited the game with a thigh injury. Forest equalized through Jota Silva’s stunning half-volley, which found the back of the net via the woodwork. The match remained deadlocked, with both teams creating chances but neither able to find the winner.

In the penalty shootout, Sean Longstaff emerged as the hero, scoring the decisive spot-kick after Ibrahim Sangare and Taiwo Awoniyi missed for Forest. Joelinton’s effort was saved by Miguel, but his teammates all converted their penalties to send Newcastle into the third round, where they will face League Two side AFC Wimbledon.
