With 142 caps, Suárez has been a formidable force for Uruguay, scoring 69 goals and providing 39 assists, making him the top scorer in the country’s history. His debut came in February 2007 against Colombia, and over the years, Suárez has etched his name into the annals of football history.

In an emotional statement, Suárez expressed his thoughts on his decision to step away from the national team.

“I’ve been thinking about this and analysing this. I believe this is the right time,” he said, fighting back tears. “I want to be relaxed when I play my last game with the national team. I’ll be just as excited to play as I was in 2007 when I played for my national team for the first time. That 19-year old kid is now a veteran player, an older player – however you want to call it – with an incredible history with the national team, that will give his life for the team.”

Suárez’s career with Uruguay is studded with memorable moments. He participated in nine major international tournaments, including the 2010 World Cup, where he became infamous for his goal-line handball against Ghana in the quarter-finals. His actions prevented Ghana from scoring in the final minute of extra time, leading to a penalty miss by Asamoah Gyan. Uruguay subsequently won the shootout, advancing to their first World Cup semi-final in 40 years.

The following year, Suárez played a pivotal role in leading Uruguay to victory in the 2011 Copa America in Argentina, where he finished as the tournament’s second top scorer with four goals. However, controversy followed him at the 2014 World Cup when he was banned for four months after biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini during a group-stage match.

Despite the ups and downs, Suárez’s impact on the international stage is undeniable. His final match in Uruguay’s colors will undoubtedly be a poignant moment, not just for him but for football fans worldwide, as they bid farewell to a player who has left an indelible mark on the sport.

As Suárez prepares to hang up his boots for his country, his legacy as Uruguay’s all-time leading scorer and one of the most passionate and controversial figures in football will be remembered for years to come.
