The political landscape of Oyo State has been marked by the contributions of many great men, but few have left as indelible a mark as Chief Michael Adeniyi Koleosho.
The former Secretary to the Oyo State Government (SSG) passed away on Monday at the age of 86. The news of his death was announced early Tuesday, sending waves of mourning throughout the state and beyond.
Born in Saki, Chief Koleosho dedicated his life to public service, playing pivotal roles in the governance and development of Oyo State. He served as the SSG from 1999 to 2003 under the administration of the late Alhaji Lamidi Adesina, who governed the state on the platform of the Alliance for Democracy. However, his influence extended far beyond this role.
During the Second Republic, Chief Koleosho served as the Commissioner for Works and Transport under the leadership of the late Chief Bola Ige.
In this capacity, he was instrumental in establishing The Polytechnic of Ibadan’s Saki Satellite campus, which has since evolved into The Oke-Ogun Polytechnic. This institution has become a vital center for learning, offering educational opportunities to thousands of students in the region.
In recognition of his significant contributions, the Oyo State government, under Governor Seyi Makinde, recently honored him by renaming the polytechnic after him—a lasting testament to his impact on education and development in the state.
Governor Seyi Makinde, in a heartfelt statement on Tuesday, described Chief Koleosho’s death as the end of an era. He lauded the late leader as a great patriot and a political icon who played outstanding roles in the development of both Oyo State and Nigeria.
The governor noted that Chief Koleosho, who held the revered title of Babalaje of Saki, was one of the last men standing from a generation of leaders who selflessly served their state and country.
“I received the news of the death of Baba Michael Koleoso, the Babalaje of Saki, with shock and sadness,” Governor Makinde stated.
“Oyo State and Nigeria have lost a great patriot and selfless leader, one of the last men standing in the batch of leaders who gave their all to make Nigeria a better place.”
The governor also reflected on his personal connection with the late Chief Koleosho, describing him as a father figure and a courageous leader who always spoke truth to power.
“People who know me know that I had a special bond with Babalaje; I held him as a father and had the utmost regard for him, as he was a courageous and upright leader who spoke truth to power,” Makinde said.
He further emphasized that Chief Koleosho’s guidance and experience were instrumental in steering Oyo State towards greatness.
As the people of Oyo State, particularly the residents of Saki, mourn this monumental loss, Governor Makinde extended his condolences to the immediate and political families of the deceased, as well as to the entire state. He prayed for strength and comfort for all who were touched by Chief Koleosho’s life and legacy.
“It is the end of a glorious era, and we can only pray to God to grant repose to the soul of our Baba,” the governor concluded.
Chief Michael Adeniyi Koleosho’s passing marks the end of a significant chapter in Oyo State’s history. His legacy, however, will continue to inspire future generations, serving as a beacon of dedication, integrity, and leadership for years to come.
