The Anambra State government has taken swift action in addressing a disturbing case of elder abuse, arresting a mother and her two children for physically assaulting their 75-year-old father, Romanus Obidigwe. The incident occurred in the Awba-Ofemmili community, Awka North Local Government Area, and was reported to the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare.
According to the victim, he has been subjected to constant battering by his family members, with the latest incident involving his daughter selling his firewood without consent. When he confronted her, they tied him up, inflicted injuries, and locked him out of his compound.
The arrested suspects, Esther Obidigwe, Ozioma Obidigwe, and Obuka Obidigwe, have been handed over to the police for further investigation and prosecution. The Commissioner for Women’s Affairs and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo, has assured that the victim will receive justice, emphasizing that her ministry is committed to protecting the social welfare of all citizens, not just women and children.
