Nigeria Elevates Global Passport Standards by Adopting ICAO Public Key Directory

Date:

Nigeria has officially joined the International Civil Aviation Organisation’s (ICAO) Public Key Directory (PKD) and Public Key Infrastructure (PKI). This significant step was announced by Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Babatunde Alao, in Abuja.

The move aims to enhance the global standing of Nigeria’s international passports, streamline border passage, and strengthen internal security. Dr. Tunji-Ojo, along with Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) Kemi Nandap, participated in the ICAO-led Import Ceremony of the Country Signing Certificate Authority (CSCA) in Montreal, Canada.

Tunji-Ojo highlighted that this initiative is part of the government’s broader efforts to modernize border control systems, reduce airport wait times, and improve the overall travel experience for Nigerians and international visitors. He noted that President Bola Tinubu is committed to advancing the country’s global ranking and facilitating business.

The PKD allows for the secure sharing of travel document information among member states, enhancing the authentication of e-passports and other travel documents. PKI uses digital certificates and key pairs to ensure secure communication and data integrity.

NIS Comptroller-General Kemi Nandap emphasized that the necessary infrastructure for this new technology is in place, and staff training is underway in partnership with IATA. This system is expected to transform border management, improve security, and foster inter-agency collaboration between the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and NIS.
