The ongoing fuel crisis in Nigeria has led the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to adjust its financial support for the transport unions involved in Saturday’s Edo State governorship election. This move is a response to the sharp rise in fuel prices, which has significantly increased the operating costs for transportation companies.
INEC’s decision followed a meeting held last Friday at its State Office in Benin City, Edo’s capital. The meeting was chaired by INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, and included discussions with key stakeholders from the transportation sector. Representatives from the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), the National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), and the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria were present.
The Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Rotimi Oyekanmi, confirmed the commission’s financial adjustment during an interview on Monday. This measure aims to ensure smooth logistics and the timely delivery of election materials across the state, despite the rising fuel costs.
