Former UK Prime Minister Liz Truss abruptly walked off stage during a speaking event at Beccles Public Hall in Suffolk after activists unfurled a banner with a picture of a lettuce and the words “I crashed the economy.” The banner, referencing the viral joke about her short-lived premiership, interrupted her speech promoting her new book.
A video shared on X (formerly Twitter) captured the moment when Truss, noticing the banner, remarked, “that’s not funny,” before leaving the stage. The prank was orchestrated by the activist group Led By Donkeys, who took responsibility on social media, stating, “Liz Truss is on a pro-Trump speaking tour. So we dropped a strategically-positioned remote-controlled lettuce banner. She didn’t find it funny.”
In response, Truss accused the group of attempting to “intimidate people and suppress free speech” through their actions.
Suffolk Police arrested a 50-year-old man on suspicion of burglary with intent to commit damage. He was later released without charge, and no further action will be taken.
The audience had mixed reactions, with some laughing and others clapping as Truss left the stage. The event, meant to showcase her political ideas, was instead overshadowed by the protest.
