Hezbollah Pagers Explode, Killing 9, Injuring 2,800

Date:

Twin explosions across Lebanon killed at least nine people, including a young girl, and injured around 2,800, with Hezbollah blaming Israel for the blasts. The Iran-backed militant group accused Israel of sabotaging its communication devices, specifically pagers used by its members. The explosions occurred just hours after Israel announced its expanded war aims to include fighting Hezbollah along the Lebanon border.

Lebanese Health Minister Firass Abiad confirmed the casualties, stating that 200 of the injured were in critical condition. Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes, with hospitals overwhelmed and medical staff treating patients in car parks. The blasts targeted Hezbollah strongholds, dealing a significant blow to the group.

Hezbollah vowed to continue its fight in support of Gaza, promising retaliation against Israel. The US denied involvement in the incident, with State Department spokesman Matthew Miller emphasizing that Washington was unaware of the events. The blasts have escalated tensions in the region, prompting major airlines to suspend flights to Tel Aviv, Tehran, and Beirut.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in the region to revive stalled ceasefire talks between Israel and Hamas. Washington continues to work with Qatar and Egypt to finalize an agreement, despite Israel’s rejection of US assessments. The conflict has resulted in significant casualties, with over 41,000 killed in Gaza and 1,205 in Israel since October 7. The UN General Assembly is debating a resolution demanding an end to Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories.
