The Joint Action Committee of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) has issued a three-week ultimatum to the Federal Government, threatening to embark on an indefinite strike if their four months of withheld salaries are not paid.
The unions are also demanding the implementation of the 2009 agreements, improved remuneration, and earned allowances. The government had invoked the “No Work, No Pay” policy during a prolonged strike by university unions in 2022.
In a statement jointly signed by SSANU President Mohammed Ibrahim and NASU General Secretary Prince Peters Adeyemi, the unions noted that a 10-day grace period had already expired on 26th July 2024, without payment being made. Despite presidential approval for the payment in July, no funds have been released.
“We are giving the government a final three-week ultimatum, starting from 17th September 2024, to fulfill these obligations. Failure to do so will result in an indefinite strike,” Ibrahim stated.
With universities at risk of another shutdown, the unions urge swift action to address their concerns.
