The ongoing leadership crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has intensified as calls to remove acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, divide the party. Amid growing tensions, four PDP governors, led by Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, have thrown their support behind Damagum. The governors—Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State, Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State, and Agbu Kefas of Taraba State—have aligned with Wike to sustain Damagum’s position.
On the opposing side, Bauchi State Governor and Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, Bala Mohammed, leads a group of seven governors pushing for Damagum’s ouster. These include the governors of Edo, Bayelsa, Osun, Rivers, Delta, and Akwa Ibom states.
The crisis worsened after Damagum supported Wike’s controversial decision to postpone the National Executive Committee meeting and approve the Rivers State PDP Congresses. This move has further alienated a faction of governors, leading to heightened tensions within the party.
Governor Makinde reassured Damagum of his unwavering support, vowing to help reposition the PDP. Meanwhile, the neutral stance of Enugu and Zamfara governors has left the party in a delicate balance.
As the crisis deepens, the PDP Board of Trustees held a series of closed-door meetings to seek resolution. However, with both sides firmly entrenched, the future of the party’s leadership remains uncertain.
