In a powerful statement on Monday, Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere, a member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, issued a grave warning regarding the state of the nation. Ugochinyere declared that “Nigeria is finished,” citing alleged acts of arson linked to supporters of a serving minister in President Bola Tinubu’s administration. These accusations have emerged against the backdrop of an escalating political crisis in Rivers State following the recent Local Government elections.
Arson Allegations in Rivers State
According to reports, a section of the Eleme Local Government secretariat in Rivers State was set on fire shortly after the arrival of the newly-elected chairman, Brian Gokpa. The arson attack has been attributed to the supporters of a government minister, further intensifying tensions in the region. The incident has sparked outrage as many question the response of law enforcement. Ugochinyere specifically highlighted the failure of the police to contain the violence, noting that authorities had not intervened despite the alleged perpetrators acting with impunity.
Ugochinyere’s Alarming Statement
In a post shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Ugochinyere did not mince words about the gravity of the situation. He warned of the severe consequences that could arise if the political unrest in Rivers State is allowed to continue unchecked.
“Nigeria is finished. Supporters of a serving minister in Tinubu’s government are alleged to be busy burning headquarters of another arm of government and the Police since morning have not stopped them,” he wrote.
Ugochinyere further implored President Tinubu to take immediate action to halt the chaos, drawing a parallel to similar events in the country’s past that led to devastating outcomes. “Mr. President, do you know what this means? Nigeria has worked paths like this before and the consequences were enormous. Stop the madness these overnight supporters are carrying out.”
Political Crisis in Rivers State
The political unrest in Rivers State stems from the recent Local Government elections, which saw new officials, including Chairman Brian Gokpa, sworn into office. The elections, however, have been marred by controversy and opposition, particularly from factions allegedly loyal to former Governor Nyesom Wike. Ugochinyere alluded to this in his statement, referencing an alleged “Wike group” that he claimed is attempting to undermine the newly elected administration of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
“Elected LGA Chairmen have been sworn in, and there is nothing these alleged Wike group can do that will change this or remove the democratically elected government of Gov. Fubara from office,” Ugochinyere stated.
Rising Concerns for Nigeria’s Stability
Ugochinyere’s statement has raised alarm bells about the potential for further instability, not only in Rivers State but across the nation. The combination of political violence, law enforcement inaction, and the broader political divide has many Nigerians concerned about the country’s future. With tensions mounting, the pressure is now on President Tinubu and his administration to address these escalating conflicts and restore order.
