NNPP Chairperson Hints at Possible Coalition to Challenge Tinubu in 2027 Election

Date:

The National Chairperson of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Ajuri Ahmed, has revealed ongoing discussions among major political parties aimed at forming a coalition to contest President Bola Tinubu’s expected re-election campaign in the 2027 general election. Ahmed made these remarks at the NNPP’s campaign launch in Akure, Ondo State, ahead of the November 16 governorship election.

President Tinubu, a key figure in Nigeria’s political landscape, is a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The prospect of his second term has triggered discussions among opposition leaders seeking to prevent the APC from retaining power beyond 2027. While Ahmed did not disclose the identities of the parties involved in the coalition talks, he urged other opposition groups to remain vigilant and resist any attempts by the APC to cause divisions.

“Our door is open for any coalition ahead of the 2027 election. And if it doesn’t work, our party is capable of standing on its own,” Ahmed stated, highlighting NNPP’s preparedness to either lead or join forces in a broader political strategy.

Fear of Election Manipulation

Ahmed also raised concerns over potential election malpractice in the upcoming Ondo State governorship election, warning that the APC may resort to manipulation tactics. He urged NNPP supporters to actively engage in the voting process and safeguard their votes.

“There is widespread fear that the ruling party may attempt to manipulate the election in their favor because they do not want strong opposition,” Ahmed remarked. He called for credible party agents to protect the integrity of the election process, ensuring that votes are accurately counted and protected throughout the election cycle.

Call for Opposition Unity

In a strong message to the opposition, Ahmed stressed the need for unity and warned of the dangers of internal interference, which could weaken the opposition’s chances of unseating the APC. He suggested that the ruling party’s strategy may involve creating disunity among opposition parties, thereby consolidating power in Nigeria’s political sphere.

“Maintaining unity and integrity is crucial for the opposition,” Ahmed said. “If we do not remain united, the APC could turn Nigeria into a one-party state before 2027.”

While addressing NNPP supporters, Ahmed officially presented the party’s flag to their Ondo State governorship candidate, Olugbenga Edema, further solidifying their position ahead of the November election.

Implications for 2027

Ahmed’s statements underscore a significant shift in Nigeria’s political dynamics as the 2027 elections approach. Should the coalition materialize, it could pose a formidable challenge to President Tinubu’s re-election bid, reshaping the country’s political landscape. However, the NNPP’s readiness to stand alone if coalition talks fail highlights their confidence in navigating Nigeria’s complex political terrain.
