“Nigerian Politicians Lack Regard for Citizens,” Says Social Activist Mr. Macaroni

Date:

Renowned Nigerian social activist and popular skit maker Debo Adebayo, widely known as Mr. Macaroni, recently criticized Nigerian politicians for what he describes as a pervasive lack of respect and accountability towards the citizens.

In a statement shared on his social media platform, Mr. Macaroni underscored that this disregard stems from a culture of political unaccountability.

The skit maker’s remarks come on the heels of a controversial incident involving Alexander Mascot Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives from Abia State.

Ikwechegh allegedly threatened an Uber driver, warning the cab driver that he could “disappear from Nigeria” and further threatening to assault and detain him. The event has sparked widespread public outrage, raising questions about the power dynamics at play between Nigerian officials and ordinary citizens.

Reacting to the incident on his X formally (Twitter)handle, Mr. Macaroni expressed frustration, emphasizing that the attitude displayed by the lawmaker is not an isolated incident but rather indicative of a deeper systemic issue in Nigerian politics.

According to Mr. Macaroni, Nigerian politicians have long held power without accountability, which has led to a normalized culture of dismissiveness and even hostility towards the people they are meant to serve.

Mr Macaroni wrote: “Nigerian politicians lack regard for Nigerians and this is because they have never been accountable to the people.

“The other day the FCT Minister was addressing some Nigerians and he said; “are you stupid, is it because I came down to talk to you”

“You are a civil servant!

“What do you mean by “is it because I came down to talk to you?”

“You are talking to the people that pay your salary!!! Whatever privileges your office allows you is as a function of your service to the people! You work for the people and not the other way round. Arrogance has no place in public office!!!

“Nigeria is not a private entity. Your duty is to serve!!! You are not anybody’s chairman.

“So, next time any Nigerian politician is addressing the people, please remind them that they are speaking to the people they are serving, not their followers.”
