Police Send Russell Brand Case to CPS for Consideration

Date:

Detectives investigating Russell Brand over historical sex offence allegations have submitted a file of evidence to prosecutors for potential charges.

Brand has been interviewed three times by police since a 2023 investigation by the Sunday Times, the Times, and Channel 4’s Dispatches revealed allegations of rape, sexual assault, and emotional abuse against the comedian and actor.

The incidents allegedly occurred between 2006 and 2013, during which Brand held several high profile positions, including at Channel 4 and BBC Radio 2. Brand has denied the allegations, describing them as “very, very hurtful.”

The Metropolitan Police stated on Saturday that they had received multiple reports of sexual offences from women following the initial investigation. As part of their inquiry, a man in his 40s was interviewed under caution on three separate occasions.

“A file of evidence has now been passed to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS)for their consideration,” the police added. The CPS confirmed receiving the file to consider charges related to historical sex offences by a 49-year-old man.

The allegations against Brand span a seven-year period when he was at the peak of his fame, hosting national television and radio programmes, and starring in Hollywood films. Additional claims involve Brand’s allegedly controlling, abusive, and predatory behaviour.

Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy, leading the investigation, stated, “We have a team of dedicated officers providing specialist support to the women who have come forward. We are committed to investigating sexual offences, no matter how long ago they are alleged to have taken place.”

In an online interview earlier this year, Brand expressed his distress over the accusations, calling them “very, very painful” and “the most appalling crimes.”
