Renowned Canadian stage actor Julien Arnold tragically passed away on Sunday, November 24, 2024, at the age of 60.
He reportedly suffered a medical emergency while performing in A Christmas Carol at Edmonton’s Citadel Theatre. Alberta Health Services confirmed his death at the scene after multiple resuscitation attempts.
Arnold’s death has left a void in Edmonton’s theatre community. In a heartfelt statement, Jessie van Rijn, the Citadel Theatre’s executive director, and Daryl Cloran, the artistic director, said, “His presence brought joy, heart, and depth to every role. His artistic contributions will be deeply missed.”
Over a career spanning more than 25 years, Arnold became a celebrated figure in Canadian theatre, particularly for his work at the Citadel Theatre. His most notable performances include A Christmas Carol, where he brought characters like Marley’s Ghost and Mr. Fezziwig to life. A founding member of the Freewill Shakespeare Festival, Arnold showcased his talent in Shakespearean classics such as King Lear, Twelfth Night, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
Arnold’s creative influence extended beyond acting. He directed and produced numerous plays through his company, The Atlas Theatre Collective, and held advanced degrees in directing from the University of Alberta.
His passing during a live performance underscores his lifelong dedication to the stage. Edmonton’s theatre community mourns the loss of a warm and talented artist whose legacy is marked by his ability to bring depth and joy to every production.
