Lagos State Government Debunks Claims of Sachet Water Ban

Date:

The Lagos State Government has categorically refuted claims that it has imposed a ban on sachet water within the state. Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, addressed the issue on Sunday in a statement posted on his official X (formerly Twitter) account.

Wahab’s response came in reaction to a viral video showing enforcement officers destroying packs of sachet water at various locations in Lagos. The footage sparked widespread speculation and misinformation, prompting the need for clarification from the state government.

In his statement, Wahab explained that the individuals featured in the video were not affiliated with any Lagos State agency or the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources. Instead, they were identified as enforcement officers from the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

“Their actions,” Wahab stated, “are part of an enforcement exercise targeting sachet water products that fail to comply with NAFDAC regulations, ensuring public safety and health.”

He further emphasized that Lagos State has no intention of banning sachet water. Instead, the state remains committed to tackling plastic waste through sustainable management initiatives.

Focus on Plastic Waste Management

Wahab outlined the state’s efforts in addressing the environmental challenges posed by plastic pollution, particularly from sachet water and polythene terephthalate (PET) products. He highlighted the introduction of a mandatory Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) program. This initiative requires manufacturers of PET, sachets, and carrier bags to adopt eco-friendly practices, including the use of materials no less than 40 microns thick.

“Our focus is on ensuring effective plastic waste management rather than banning sachet water,” Wahab clarified.

The clarification from the Lagos State Government aims to dispel the misinformation surrounding sachet water in the state while reinforcing its commitment to public health and environmental sustainability. Citizens are urged to verify such reports through official channels to avoid unnecessary panic and misinterpretation.

In conclusion, Lagos State has reaffirmed its focus on safeguarding public health and ensuring effective waste management, while NAFDAC continues its enforcement efforts to remove unregistered and unsafe products from the market.
