UN Secretary-General Calls for Unified Global Effort Against Conflict and Inequality

Date:

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called on nations to urgently address the critical issues of conflict, inequality, and climate change.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Guterres reflected on the past year’s challenges and emphasized the need for decisive action in 2025.

Guterres highlighted the current global crisis, characterized by wars that cause immense suffering and displacement, widening inequalities, and growing mistrust.

He described the ongoing climate crisis as an alarming reality, noting that 2024 was one of the hottest years in a decade of unprecedented heat. “Throughout 2024, hope has been scarce. Wars are causing immense pain, suffering, and displacement. Inequalities and divisions are rampant, fueling tensions and mistrust.

“And today, I can confirm that we have just experienced a decade of deadly heat. The top ten hottest years on record have occurred in the last decade, including 2024.

“This is climate breakdown — in real time. We must change course urgently,” he explained.

Despite the challenges, Guterres pointed to signs of hope and progress. He praised the efforts of activists advocating for change, humanitarian workers supporting vulnerable populations, and scientists and innovators developing solutions for humanity.

He also commended developing nations for their persistent fight for financial and climate justice.

A significant event in 2024, he said, was the adoption of the Pact for the Future by world leaders in September.

The agreement aims to foster peace through disarmament, reform the global financial system to represent all countries, create opportunities for women and young people, and ensure technology serves humanity rather than profits.

Guterres acknowledged the uncertainty of the future but pledged to support those working towards a more peaceful, equal, and stable world.

He urged nations to unite in 2025, envisioning a world driven by a common purpose rather than divided by conflict.

“There are no guarantees for what’s ahead. But I pledge to stand with all those working to create a more peaceful, equal, stable, and healthy future for all people. Together, we can make 2025 a new beginning,” Guterres said.

His message serves as a call to action for global leaders, organizations, and individuals to work collectively towards solutions that uphold human rights, international law, and the values enshrined in the United Nations Charter.
