Meta is discontinuing the use of independent fact checkers on Facebook and Instagram, opting instead for X-style “community notes” where users can comment on the accuracy of posts.
In a video accompanying a blog post on Tuesday, CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated that third-party moderators were “too politically biased” and that it was “time to get back to our roots around free expression.”
This move comes as Zuckerberg and other tech executives aim to improve relations with US President-elect Donald Trump before he takes office later this month.
Trump and his Republican allies have criticized Meta’s fact-checking policy, labeling it as censorship of right-wing voices.
Following the announcement, Trump expressed his approval at a news conference, stating that he was impressed by Zuckerberg’s decision and that Meta had “come a long way.”
