Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau vowed a strong response if US President Donald Trump imposes 25 percent tariffs on Canadian imports, which Trump indicated could happen as early as February.
During a news conference, Trudeau stated that Canada would respond decisively, with all options on the table. He emphasized that Ottawa’s reaction would be swift, robust, and measured, matching the US tariffs dollar for dollar.
Trudeau made these remarks at a cabinet retreat focused on strategizing how to address the economic threats posed by the new Trump administration.
President Trump has called for tighter US borders with Canada and Mexico to curb the flow of migrants and illicit drugs. Shortly after taking office on Monday, Trump told reporters that punitive tariffs against the two major US trading partners could be implemented as early as February 1.
“We’re considering 25 percent tariffs on Mexico and Canada because they allow large numbers of people and fentanyl to enter the US,” Trump said. He also signed an order directing agencies to study various trade issues, including deficits, unfair practices, and currency manipulation, which could lead to further duties.
