Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has criticized U.S. President Donald Trump, asserting that Trump was elected to govern the United States, not to “rule the world.”
In an interview with two radio stations in Bahia on Thursday, Lula remarked, “I respect the election of President Trump, who was chosen by the American people to govern the United States, but he was not elected to rule the world.” His comments were made in response to Trump’s recent plans to relocate Palestinians from the Gaza Strip.
Lula emphasized the importance of maintaining “democratic and civilized” relations with the international community, noting Trump’s intentions.
On Tuesday, during a news conference, Trump declared that the United States would take ownership of the Gaza Strip and redevelop it after relocating the Palestinians elsewhere.
Lula also criticized the United States for positioning itself as “a symbol of democracy and the ‘sheriff’ of the world.” He described Trump’s statements on occupying certain countries and territories as “provocations.”
In the meantime, UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called on the international community to continue advocating for a full ceasefire and the release of all hostages in Gaza. He made these remarks at a session of the UN Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, which convened to elect a new bureau and adopt a work program for the year.
